The boswellic acid (the active compound) has remarkable anti-inflammatory properties, to the extent that they can be treated with anti-inflammatory synthesis (including NSAIDs - Non Steroid Anti-Inflammatory), used on a large scale. In addition, the Boswellia serrata has the great advantage of not causing gastrointestinal effects, typical adverse effects of conventional anti-inflammatories. All this has been demonstrated in several clinical studies. The anti-inflammatory action of this plant occurs by inhibiting the enzyme 5-lipoxygenase, leading to blockage of leukotriene synthesis (synthesized substances during the process of inflammation). One of the characteristic symptoms of inflammation is pain. As such, the Boswellia serrata is also effective in relieving pain. These two actions cause concomitant this plant has properties highly beneficial in cases of disease where inflammation is severe.
